My name is Tom Carter, and I live in Kensington, Maryland. In the late fall of 1959 I visited Utica and met a lovely young lady named Gail Andrews, a student at the time at Utica Free Academy. Subsequent to that visit, I went to Germany as a guest of the U.S. Marine Corps, and I don't recall that Ms. Andrews and I were ever in contact after that. Ms. Andrews gave me her UFA ring before I left, and I'd like to get it back to her. I'll be happy to send it to the Alumni Association if you can assure me that it will be returned to her. I think that having it in my possession for 41 years is probably enough, and she'd probably like to have it.
Thank you,
Tom Carter

Good Morning Francis,
I am in search of information (photos, atticles etc) on DaleC. Engell. I understand there was a Dale Engell that
graduated in 1939.
Dale was a 2nd Lt in the USAAF during WWII. He was assigned to the 8th AF,91Bomber Group,324th Bomber Squdron at
Bassingbourn England. On 09 oct1943 Dale was a replacement Bombardier for 2nd Lt Albert Rolnick of the 322nd Sqd.
Albert hit his head on a bombay door 15 minutes pior to flight.Their mission for the day was a raid on Anklam
Germany. The aircraft, a B-17F Flying Fortress "Chief Sly III" was piloted by my uncle 1st LT. Charles
Bernard Pinning of Baltimore. On the return from Anklam "Chief Sly III",a/c ser.# 42-29711, was shot down
by German fighters over the Baltic Sea. The a/c crashed off the Danish Island of Falster-there were no survivers.
Only 7 of the 10 crew members remains were recovered. Dale along with the Radioman and Ball Turrett Gunner were
not recovered and assumed to have remained in the a/c.
I have had a Memorial Plaque mounted in the Memorial Gardens at the "The Mighty 8th Air Force Heritage Museum"
in Pooler Ga.(just outside of Savannah).I also have put together a "booklet"(approx 40 pages) on the
a/c and her crew(as much as I have been able to gather)and have given a copy to each family I have been able to
contact.I'm 7 of 10 thus far.-after 57 years it has been a challange. Also a copy has been sent to the Tower Museum
in Bassingbourn,England and a copy is in the library at The Mighty 8th Museum in Pooler.Dales family has eluded
me.
My mission is twofold, one to let families of the crew know their loved ones have been Honored and Remembered, and
I wish to add additional info to the "booklet" so hat the history of the a/c and her crew can be perserved
for future generations. They were members of the "Greatest Generation".
As much as I have been able to determine the mission of 09 Oct 1943 may have been the only mission and Lt. Dale
C. Engell flew .
Any information/contacts that you may be able to provide will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you-Bill
